South Gate -- Working to promote community public safety, and the safety of South Gate law enforcement officers, Congresswoman Linda Sánchez (39-CA) today announced that the South Gate Police Department will receive $24,325 from the U.S. Department of Justice Bulletproof Vest Partnership Program. The partnership program provides up to 50% funding for the purchase of bulletproof vests.

Whittier - Working to celebrate and support our veterans, Congresswoman Linda Sánchez (CA-39) is working to pass legislation she introduced to establish the first national “Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day” (H. Res. 485). Many of our troops returned home from Vietnam, after dedicated service to our country, only to find that they were despised and belittled by much of the American public. This small gesture of proclamation hopefully will go a long way towards healing the wounds still suffered by so many Vietnam veterans.

Washington, DC - Today, Congresswoman Linda Sánchez released a Government Reform study on the “real” value of the minimum wage at a press conference announcing the introduction of the “Fair Minimum Wage Act.” At the press conference, Senator Kennedy and Congressman George Miller announced that they are introducing legislation to raise the minimum wage from $5.15 to $7.00 per hour. Actor Ben Affleck, whose parents were low-wage workers at Harvard University, joined the lawmakers to unveil the new legislation.

Paramount - Congresswoman Linda Sánchez (CA-39), who is Paramount's new representative in the U.S. Congress in Washington, DC, recently paid a visit to Roosevelt Elementary School in Paramount to view the city's “Gang Resistance Is Paramount“ (GRIP) program in action. GRIP is an innovative program developed by the City of Paramount in the early 1980's to steer children away from joining gangs.

Washington, D.C. -- Working to improve traffic flow and safety, Congresswoman Linda Sánchez (CA-39) secured $2.2 million for the reconstruction of Long Beach Boulevard in Lynwood. These funds were secured as part of the “Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users” (H.R. 3550), also known as TEA-LU. TEA-LU passed in the U.S. House of Representatives by a vote of 357 to 65 on April 2, 2004. The Senate passed their version of this bill on the same day. Currently, House and Senate negotiators are working out the differences between the two versions of the bill.

Washington, D.C. -- Working to improve commuting and safety in local communities, Congresswoman Linda Sánchez (CA-39) secured $14 million dollars for transportation projects across Southeastern Los Angeles County. These funds were secured as part of the Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users (H.R. 3550), also known as TEA-LU. This bill will determine government spending on surface transportation for the next six-years. TEA-LU passed today in the U.S. House of Representatives by a vote of 357 to 65. The Senate passed their version of this bill in February.

La Mirada - Working to bring more opportunities and resources to the City of La Mirada, Congresswoman Linda Sánchez (CA-39) met with current Mayor Susan Tripp, former Mayor Hal Malkin, City Manager Andrea Travis, and Assistant City Manager John Di Mario to discuss the city’s projects for the upcoming year. Each year, Congresswoman Sánchez meets with the mayors from every city in the 39th District to determine ways the federal government can be helpful.

Washington, D.C. -- Working to help keep our communities safe and secure, Congresswoman Linda Sánchez (CA-39) today announced that an important provision from her bi-partisan “Bullying Prevention for School Safety and Crime Reduction Act of 2003” (H.R.3692), was included in the Department of Justice Reauthorization Bill (H.R. 3036) which passed the U.S. House of Representatives today. The section of Sánchez’ bi-partisan bill included in H.R. 3036 will expand the Juvenile Accountability Block Grant fund to encompass bullying programs.
