WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Congresswoman Linda Sánchez (CA-39) today hailed the House’s passage of an important amendment to block implementation of the Bush Administration’s new overtime pay regulations. The regulations, which took effect on August 23, do not compensate extra hours of work. They cut pay, and lengthen hours for workers. The amendment was passed by a vote of 223 to 193.

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Congresswoman Linda T. Sánchez today expressed opposition to the new regulations on overtime pay, which will take effect on August 23, and will cut the pay and lengthen the hours for workers making as little as $23,660. Middle-income workers making between $23,660 and $100,000 will feel the greatest impact of the regulations. A recent study by the Economic Policy Institute shows that this will deny overtime rights to at least six million workers, at a time when household incomes are down and prices are up.

LYNWOOD, CALIF. - U.S. Congresswoman Linda T. Sánchez (CA-39) hosted a diversity forum today at the Lynwood High School Performing Arts center in Lynwood, California. The purpose of the event was to provide an open, town hall environment in which the community could discuss diversity and the challenges and opportunities that it presents. Creating unity out of diversity was a theme of the evening.

Washington, DC - Following through on her commitment to address the growing gang violence in our communities, Congresswoman Linda Sánchez (CA-39), today announced that she has successfully secured a commitment for funding for the Gang Alternatives Program (GAP) for schools throughout Southeast Los Angeles County. The GAP program offers anti-gang classes and services to elementary school children to discourage them from joining gangs and steer them toward positive activities.

Washington, DC - Working to help protect the safety and security of our children, Congresswoman Linda Sánchez (CA-39) today announced that she has secured a commitment to fund the Whittier Union High School District’s School Resource Officer program. Sánchez got the project included in the Commerce, Justice, State Fiscal Year 2005 Appropriations bill, which passed the House Appropriations Committee today, and is expected to be passed by the U.S. House of Representatives shortly.

Sánchez got the project included in the Commerce, Justice, State Fiscal Year 2005 Appropriations bill, which passed the House Appropriations Committee today, and is expected to be passed in the U.S. House of Representatives shortly.

Whittier -Congresswoman Linda Sánchez (CA -39th) today participated in a ribbon cutting ceremony for the new Whittier Public Library “Learning Village.” In February, Sánchez secured $300,000 to pay for this project in the FY 2003 Omnibus Appropriations bill.

“I am thrilled to have secured this funding for the Whittier Public Library and delighted to be a part of today’s ribbon cutting ceremony. The Learning Village will provide Whittier area children and families with access to knowledgeable staff, tutors, technology, and computer training,” said Congresswoman Linda Sánchez.

Cerritos -- Working to recognize the artistic talents and creative spirit of California’s high school youth, Congresswoman Linda Sánchez will host her second annual 39th District Art Competition on Thursday, May 27th.

The competition is open to all high school students living in California’s 39th Congressional District and the winning art piece will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol Building in Washington, D.C. The 39th district winner and his/her parents will also be flown to Washington, D.C. in June for a national reception honoring each winner from across the country.

The first order of business for the emergency physician, or nurse, or whoever happens to be attending to this patient is NOT to ask them where it hurts and do a physical exam to see if their life is imminently in danger, but to ask their immigration status, and get a sworn statement to that effect.
