Washington, DC - Working to fight the injustice along the United States borders, Congresswoman Linda Sánchez (CA-39) joined Representative Sheila Jackson-Lee (TX-18) and members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus in announcing a critical piece of legislation, The Commercial Alien Smuggling Elimination Act of 2003: The CASE Act (HR-2630) in a press conference on Wednesday July 16 on Capitol Hill.

As an original co-sponsor of this bill, Congresswoman Sánchez recognizes the serious problems that commercial alien smuggling creates.

South Gate -- Working to promote community public safety, and the safety of South Gate law enforcement officers, Congresswoman Linda Sánchez (39-CA) today announced that the South Gate Police Department will receive $6,146 from the U.S. Department of Justice Bulletproof Vest Partnership Program. The partnership program provides up to 50% funding for the purchase of bulletproof vests.

Congresswoman Sánchez is a sponsor of legislation that provides funding for the Federal Bulletproof Vest Grant Program.

Whittier -- Working to promote community public safety, and the safety of Whittier law enforcement officers, Congresswoman Linda Sánchez (39-CA) today announced that the Whittier Police Department will receive $9,559 from the U.S. Department of Justice’s Bulletproof Vest Partnership Program. The partnership program provides up to 50% of funding for the purchase of bulletproof vests.

Congresswoman Sánchez is a sponsor of legislation that provides funding for the Federal Bulletproof Vest Program.

Washington, DC - Working to increase the supply of clean drinking water for Southern California, Congresswoman Linda Sánchez (CA-39) today secured $600,000 to fund a study of the Los Angeles Basin Watershed. The study is designed to explore ways to capture rain water runoff in L.A. and Orange Counties to increase the supply of clean drinking water, reduce ocean pollution, and improve neighborhoods, mini-parks, and habitat areas.

Washington, DC - On Thursday June 10th, Congresswoman Linda Sánchez (CA-39) sported the Dodger blues during the 42nd Annual Congressional Baseball Game. Each year, Democrat and Republican Members of Congress play against each other in a game that benefits charity. Congresswoman Sánchez was the only woman to join the Democratic team.

Sánchez had one at bat, in which she hit the ball sharply to the shortstop. She sped up the line and charged towards the first base bag, only to be narrowly thrown out by a half -stride.

Lakewood - Congresswoman Linda Sánchez met with 39th District residents in a series of senior center visits in the cities of Artesia, Cerritos, Hawaiian Gardens, La Mirada, Lakewood, Los Nietos, Los Angeles and Paramount. Sánchez provided the latest information about the status of Medicare and prescription drugs in the wake of the passage of the sham Republican Prescription Drug Bill (H.R.1), which passed the U.S. House by one vote (216 to 215) on June 27, 2003.

Washington, DC - Today, Congresswoman Linda Sánchez (CA-39) hailed the Supreme Court’s ruling on affirmative action as a positive step towards a more diverse and integrated society. The high court ruled that race can be used as one factor in determining admission to colleges and universities, and it recommended that the University of Michigan Law school policy be used as blueprint.

Today Congresswoman Linda Sánchez introduced the “State Criminal Alien Assistance Program (SCAAP) Reimbursement Protection Act of 2003.” Currently, California and other border states receive federal reimbursement to cover costs of incarcerating undocumented aliens who have been arrested in the United States on suspicion of having committed a crime. However, the Department of Justice (DOJ) is now planning to change its reimbursement formula to cut the amount of funding going to states and localities.

Lakewood, CA - On Saturday April 14, 2003 Congresswoman Linda Sánchez met with local parents to discuss the potential changes facing the Head Start Program. Thirty parents from the cities of Cerritos, Hawaiian Gardens, Long Beach, Paramount, Whittier, Buena Park and Commerce were in attendance.

Parental concern has grown from the proposed Republican changes to the thirty-seven year old child development program. Under the new Republicans reauthorization plan, sweeping changes could drastically undermine the program’s broad mission of comprehensive children’s services.
