As someone who was born in the United States to immigrant parents, I find the phrase “anchor babies” — used by Jeb Bush, Donald Trump and other Republican candidates to describe American-born children of immigrants — incredibly offensive. And the word that keeps coming to mind is the Spanish term, sinvergüenza, which refers to someone utterly without embarrassment or shame.

Washington, DC- Reps. Linda T. Sánchez (CA-38) and Jackie Speier (CA- 14), along with 33 original co-sponsors, today introduced a resolution calling on the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) to immediately end gender discrimination between male and female athletes. The dominant performance by the U.S. Women’s National Soccer team drew international attention and record-breaking audiences to the 2015 Women’s World Cup. However, the female athletes participating in this year’s World Cup were compensated far less than their male counterparts.

House Democrats are calling on FIFA to eliminate the disparities between men and women’s soccer in pay, publicity and investments.

Reps. Jackie Speier (D-Calif.), Linda Sánchez (D-Calif.) and 26 of their Democratic colleagues sent a letter to FIFA President Sepp Bladder on Monday asking the international soccer association to make good on its mission, to “develop football everywhere and for all.”

Washington, DC- Rep. Linda Sánchez (CA-38) and Rep. Chris Gibson (NY-19) joined the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network (GLSEN) and 19 Members of Congress to introduce the Safe Schools Improvement Act. The legislation would require school districts to adopt codes of conduct specifically prohibiting bullying and harassment on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity and religion.
