Sánchez: Trump’s Gitmo proposal shows his cruelty toward immigrants

WASHINGTON – Congresswoman Linda T. Sánchez (D-Calif.) issued the following statement in response to President Trump’s announcement that he plans to send 30,000 undocumented immigrants to Guantanamo Bay:

“President Trump has again demonstrated his callousness and hostility toward immigrants. The prison at Guantanamo Bay is a dark chapter in our nation’s history, notorious for the repeated human rights violations that occurred there. For decades, we have fought to close this facility, and yet the president now suggests it should be expanded to imprison up to 30,000 undocumented immigrants.

“For any president – let alone one who is a convicted felon – to propose imprisoning more people at Guantanamo Bay shows a profound lack of humanity and is an alarming indication of the depths of his cruelty. I will fight to prevent any further expansion of Guantanamo Bay and ensure that no immigrant is ever detained there.”
