Sánchez: “There is no glory for hate – not a building, statue, or even a park bench”

September 28, 2023

WASHINGTON – Today, Congresswoman Linda T. Sánchez (CA-38) introduced legislation to prevent federal projects, buildings, statues, or lands from being named after Donald J. Trump. The No Glory for Hate Act would prohibit the use of federal funds for any project commemorating a president twice impeached by the House of Representatives and would further restrict the benefits afforded to them after leaving office.

"Donald J. Trump is the first president in our nation’s history to be indicted. The former president has been charged in four criminal cases this year alone and faces felony charges for giving hush money to a porn star, hoarding classified documents, and trying to overturn the 2020 election,” said Congresswoman Linda T. Sánchez. “Before that, he fueled falsehoods, promoted racism and hatred, and eventually ignited the events of January 6th. We should never glorify the hatred Donald Trump personified as president. This bill ensures that there is no glory for hate – not a building, statue, or even a park bench."

The No Glory for Hate Act prohibits the use of federal funds for any:

  •          symbol,
  •          monument,
  •          structure,
  •          building, or
  •          public land…

…commemorating a former president twice impeached by the House of Representatives, or who has been convicted of a State or Federal crime relating to actions taken in an official capacity.

The bill also restricts the benefits given to the former president who has been twice impeached by the House of Representatives, including:

  •         pension,
  •         staff,
  •         office travel expenses, and
  •         burial in Arlington National Cemetery.

Congresswoman Sánchez first introduced this legislation in the wake of the January 6th insurrection, when she was barricaded inside a locked office, armed with only the baseball bats she plays the Congressional baseball game with.

"I remember getting the horrifying news that no one was coming to help us – that the National Guard had not gotten approval – while police officers were being beaten and overrun. Seven people died in connection with the insurrection, including three police officers. I thought, no one who stirs up this seditionist act should ever be held to the same high standards we hold for our former presidents who served with grace," said Congresswoman Sánchez.

Congresswoman Sánchez added: "Even though Trump is no longer in office, he should still be held accountable for his actions. And taxpayers should not foot the bill for anything that honors his tenure. I never want to see students in Southern California – or anywhere in America – attend a school named in honor of a traitorous president."

The No Glory For Hate Act is co-sponsored by Reps. Schakowsky (IL-09), Blumenauer (OR-03), Williams (GA-05), Lee (CA-12), and Napolitano (CA-31).
