Sánchez: Tariffs are for leveling playing fields for U.S. workers, not weapons for settling scores

January 31, 2025

WASHINGTON – Ways and Means Trade Subcommittee Ranking Member Linda T. Sánchez (D-Calif.) released the following statement in response to President Trump’s announced 25 percent tariffs on goods imported from Canada and Mexico and 10 percent on goods imported from China:

"President Trump's proposed tariffs are not about fair trade – they're a misguided attempt to bully our neighbors to capitulate to his inhumane, anti-immigrant agenda. Ironically, the president is going harder on our closest allies than China, the biggest perpetrator of harmful and unfair trade practices.

“Canada and Mexico are vital allies and key trading partners, and the economic relationships we share with them directly benefit our economy. Broad-based tariffs like these will only drive up prices on everything from gas to groceries, making it harder for American families to make ends meet. And they will hurt American workers like machinists and steelworkers who rely on integrated supply chains with Canada.

“Tariffs should be a tool to level the playing field for American workers and businesses, not a weapon to settle political scores.”
