Sánchez Statement on Tax Deal Framework

January 19, 2024

WASHINGTON – Today, Congresswoman Linda T. Sánchez (CA-38), a senior member on the House Committee on Ways and Means, issued the following statement regarding the “Tax Relief for American Families and Workers Act of 2024” markup discussed in committee:

“Any member willing to put People over Politics should recognize that too many families would be left behind in the Wyden-Smith bill that the Ways and Means Committee considered earlier today. As a single, working mother myself I cannot support a tax deal that prioritizes the demands of big businesses at the expense of working families across the U.S. who need and deserve tax relief, too.

“I and other Democratic tax writers fought hard to adopt changes that would have reinstated the poverty-busting Child Tax Credit President Biden signed into law as part of the American Rescue Plan Act. Unfortunately, tax-writing Republicans rejected every Democratic attempt to improve the bill. As a humble voice for working families and our nation’s poorest babies, children, and parents, I could not in good conscience vote to advance this legislation to the House Floor.”
