Sánchez statement on Israel’s war with Hamas and need for humanitarian pause in Gaza
WASHINGTON – Today, Congresswoman Linda T. Sánchez (D-CA), a Vice-President of the United States delegation to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Parliamentary Assembly, issued the following statement calling for a humanitarian pause in Gaza:
“On October 7th, Hamas terrorists demonstrated their commitment to violence when they murdered more than 1,400 people and abducted more than 200 civilian hostages, including Americans. As I have repeatedly said, Israel has the right under international law to defend its people – and to take the necessary steps, with support and security assistance from the United States, to prevent it from happening again.
“At the same time, the need for humanitarian aid in Gaza is unquestionable. Reports of civilian loss of life inside Gaza are heartbreaking. That is why at this moment, I join President Biden in calling for a humanitarian pause to prevent future loss of innocent life and ensure critical assistance – including medical supplies and other lifesaving necessities – reaches those in need.
“Make no mistake, Hamas terrorists must be brought to justice and held accountable for their actions – and the United States must continue to stand ready to help our ally in that effort. But this pause will inevitably help us achieve that goal while working to prevent civilian deaths in Gaza, secure the safe release of hostages, and immediately send humanitarian assistance to those impacted.”
