Sánchez: No strings attached to disaster relief

January 15, 2025

WASHINGTON – Congresswoman Linda T. Sánchez (D-Calif.) today issued the following statement in strong opposition to any attempts to attach political conditions to disaster relief for the victims of the recent wildfires in Los Angeles County:

“It is truly unconscionable that Republicans are considering adding political conditions to relief for Californians hurt by these wildfires.

“These are real people – families and communities – who have lost everything in the wake of a catastrophic natural disaster. They are not pawns in a political game; they are Americans in desperate need of help from their leaders in Washington.

“California has always been there to support other states with unconditional aid when they face disaster, including Speaker Johnson’s home state of Louisiana after it was hit by hurricanes. It would be unprecedented to turn around and place conditions on aid to California wildfire victims.

“California pays more in federal taxes than we receive in return, and in times of crisis, we should not be treated any differently than any other state. Californians deserve disaster relief without any strings attached.”
