Sánchez Highlights how an Extreme MAGA Shutdown Would Harm Families in California

September 29, 2023

WASHINGTON – With just 2 days remaining until a potential extreme MAGA government shutdown, Congresswoman Linda T. Sánchez (D-CA) warned that House Republicans are risking serious consequences for Californian families:

“Families in Southern California should not be forced to pay the price for House Republicans’ inability to govern. An extreme MAGA shutdown would force millions of our troops and government employees to work without pay, risk air travel disruptions, jeopardize access to food assistance for families, and so much more, “said Congresswoman Sánchez. “It is unacceptable that House Republicans are willing to hurt working families, damage our economy, and endanger our national security in an attempt to pass their extremist agenda.”

In California alone, a Republican government shutdown would mean:

  • 213,176 active duty and reserve personnel serving our nation’s armed forces would be forced to serve without pay.
  • The Small Business Administration would stop processing small business loans halting a program that provides $4,433,591,900 in funding to small businesses in California every year.
  • 187,679 federal workers in California would be furloughed or forced to work without pay, in addition to the many employees of businesses with government contracts who could be laid off, furloughed, or see their hours cut.
  • 972,418 Californians would soon lose access to Special Supplemental Nutrition Programs for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) benefits.
  • 178,407 people flying through California airports everyday would face potential delays and safety concerns due to staffing impacts on TSA agents and air traffic controllers.
  • 38,237,347 people who visit national parks in California every year would be turned away or unable to fully access parks, monuments, and museums.

“I will continue doing everything in my power to keep the government open and protect Californian families from a costly government shutdown,” continued Congresswoman Sánchez. “We've delivered a historic economic recovery that is growing the middle class and rebuilding American manufacturing, with 2,112,800 jobs created in California since President Biden took office. An extreme MAGA shutdown that undermines our economic progress and hurts working families is the last thing we need right now.”
