Sánchez delivers $750,000 to City of Whittier, WUHSD

March 14, 2023

WHITTIER – On Tuesday, Congresswoman Linda T. Sánchez (D-CA) delivered a check in the amount of $750,000 to the City of Whittier and Whittier Union High School District (WUHSD), funding she secured as part of the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2023.

The funding Congresswoman Sánchez secured for the City and WUHSD will be used to convert underutilized property at Whittier Union High School’s Sierra Education Complex into shared community recreation space. When complete, the space can be used for youth sports programs that serve more than 2,000 young people annually.

The Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2023 was signed by President Biden in December and included funding for community projects that were requested by residents, organizations, and local partners in the 38th Congressional District. Congresswoman Sánchez secured a total of $28,428,707 for 15 community projects in her district.

“Every community should have places to relax and come together as neighbors,” said Congresswoman Linda T. Sánchez. “These funds will be used to transform underused property at the Sierra Education Complex into recreation space for all to enjoy. I am proud to be here today to deliver this funding, and I will keep fighting to ensure our communities get the resources they need and deserve.”

“On behalf of the Whittier City Council, I want to thank Congresswoman Sánchez for her continued efforts to secure the funding necessary to take exciting projects like this one to the next level and enhance the quality of life for Whittier residents,” said Mayor Joe Vinatieri.

“We know that Whittier would benefit greatly from a shared athletic complex, serving the community with updated and well-maintained fields designed for activities like football, soccer, lacrosse, and more,” Mayor Vinatieri added. “The City looks forward to working closely with the Whittier Union High School District leadership and our youth sports affiliates to provide access to recreation that contributes to the health and well-being of our younger residents.”

“We are excited about being a community hub for our families so that they may continue to enjoy first class facilities,” said WUHSD Board President Jaime Lopez. “We are thankful to Congresswoman Sánchez for securing these funds and look forward to working with the City of Whittier in designing green play spaces for all to enjoy.”
