Sánchez statement on two-year anniversary of January 6th insurrection
WASHINGTON – Today, Congresswoman Linda T. Sánchez (D-CA), who was inside the Capitol Building when it was attacked on January 6th, 2021, issued the following statement:
"Every day, memories of January 6 play over in my head. I will never forget hiding in a dark room with the door barricaded, watching on television as the mob forced its way into the building, or walking hallways filled with broken glass when we were finally cleared to return to the House floor and certify the election.
"Today, as we all remember that terrible day, I am eternally grateful for the law enforcement officers who fought to protect me and my colleagues two years ago. Specifically, I am thinking of the five police officers who lost their lives and the more than 140 who were injured defending our democracy. Those individuals deserve our gratitude every day, and they deserve a commitment from us that we will work to ensure something like that never happens again.
"On January 6, hours after the attack, Members of Congress went back to work and showed the American people that though our democracy suffered a blow, it was still standing. Two years later, we must continue to show that strength by putting people over politics and pursuing the recommendations of the January 6 Select Committee. Doing so would allow us to hold those responsible for the attack accountable, protect our elections with every resource necessary, and defend our country from violent extremism and misinformation."
