Sánchez statement on the start of Black History Month

February 1, 2023

WASHINGTON – Congresswoman T. Linda Sánchez (CA-38) today released the following statement on the first day of Black History Month:

"During Black History Month, we celebrate the rich and diverse cultures, contributions, and achievements that make up the Black American story. It is also a time to pause and reflect on our history, while recommitting ourselves to the fight for full equality.

"Following the horrific death of Tyre Nichols, it is clear our fight is far from over. We must pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act to prevent these kinds of tragedies and increase transparency and accountability in law enforcement. We must continue working to expand and protect voting rights, especially as state legislatures across the country enact discriminatory, anti-voter laws. Finally, we must address persistent gaps in health care access, housing, and other critical needs that often affect communities of color the most.

"This year, I hope we continue to build on the progress made to ensure communities of color have a voice in places where decisions are made. We now have a Black woman sitting on our nation's highest court, and a Congress that continues to look more like America. As we uplift the contributions of Black Americans in California and across the country, let us keep working toward a better, more equitable future for all."
