Sánchez statement on H. Res 11

January 10, 2023

WASHINGTON – Today, Congresswoman Linda T. Sánchez (D-CA) issued the following statement on her decision to vote NO on H. Res. 11, a Resolution Establishing the Select Committee on the Strategic Competition Between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP):

"Over the last few years, a dramatic rise in xenophobic rhetoric regarding the coronavirus has led to verbal assaults and physical violence against Asian Americans in Southern California and across the country. While we have made strides to stand against that hate, I am concerned this Republican-led committee will not advance serious legislation to make the United States more secure and competitive, but rather only legitimize blatant discrimination against Chinese Americans or those perceived to be Chinese across our communities.

"Furthermore, the creation of this committee ignores the concrete solutions advanced by Democrats in the 117th Congress to protect our economic and security interests. Working with my Ways and Means Committee colleagues, we moved to hold the Chinese government accountable for its shameful human rights violations, address unfair trade practices, and improve our global competitiveness by advancing the CHIPS, COMPETES, and EAGLE Acts. At each turn, Republicans refused to support our measures. Now, to hide their own legislative failures, Republicans are creating a separate committee with no teeth to advance their own agenda.

"As your Congresswoman, I will always stand against hate and work to prevent it whenever I can. As one of the newly elected vice presidents of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly and a senior member on the Ways and Means Committee, I will continue to firmly confront the Chinese Communist Party, strengthen our global competitiveness, protect human rights, and level the playing field for workers and businesses in the United States."
