Sánchez Statement on Final Passage of the Respect for Marriage Act

December 8, 2022

WASHINGTON – Congresswoman Linda T. Sánchez (D-CA), Vice Chair of the Congressional LGBTQ+ Equality Caucus, today released the following statement after voting to pass the Senate amendment to H.R. 8404, the Respect for Marriage Act:

"Today, we have taken a historic step toward protecting marriage equality for LGBTQ+ and interracial couples," said Congresswoman Linda T. Sánchez. "One of the government's most important responsibilities is to defend the rights of all Americans—and that includes an American's right to marry the person they love. The Respect for Marriage Act finally repeals the discriminatory Defense of Marriage Act and ensures all marriages will be respected and recognized under federal law. With this vote, I am proud to stand with the LGBTQ+ community and send the message that in America, love always wins."

Congresswoman Sánchez helped advance a version of the Respect for Marriage Act in July. The amended legislation now heads to President Biden for his signature.
