Sánchez statement on anniversary of the January 6th insurrection
WASHINGTON – Congresswoman Linda T. Sánchez (CA-38) today released the following statement on the anniversary of the attack on our nation's capital on January 6th, 2021:
"A year ago today, our country was tested when thousands of insurrectionists forced their way into the United States Capitol. This experiment that we call American democracy was nearly brought to a grinding halt, and 244 years of peaceful transitions of power was shattered by violence, destruction, and lies.
"The violence of January 6th did not appear out of nowhere. It was spawned by a loop of fear tactics and lies that the former president and his enablers exploited to maintain their power. In the past 12 months, they have used this "big lie" to justify making it harder for people to vote and easier to overturn election results. Now more than ever, we need Americans of all political stripes to stand up and say lies will not be tolerated, intimidation and violence will not be accepted, and that free and fair elections are fundamental to our democracy.
"My heart is with the families of those we lost as a result of that violent attack, especially the fallen Capitol Police and D.C. Metropolitan Police officers who bravely defended our Capitol and our democracy that day. Today and always, we will remember them as heroes."
