Sánchez recognizes Hispanic Heritage Month before House Ways and Means Committee
Sánchez, the daughter of immigrant parents from Mexico, is the first and only Latina to serve on the powerful Ways and Means Committee
WASHINGTON – Today, Congresswoman Linda T. Sánchez (D-CA), a member of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and the first Latina to serve on the House Ways and Means Committee, recognized the start of Hispanic Heritage Month before a Committee hearing and at the request of Chairman Richard Neal (D-MA).
In her remarks, Congresswoman Sánchez celebrated the achievements and contributions of Latino communities while acknowledging the need for more Latinas and Latinos in Congress.
"Hispanic Heritage Month is a time to celebrate the Latino community's achievements and all that we contribute to this amazing country," said Congresswoman Linda T. Sánchez. "I'm proud to serve as the first Latina on this panel, but I also reflect on how we need more representation in the halls of Congress. As the faces and the needs of our communities change, so should our representation, and along with it, our policies."
Hispanic Americans make up less than 10 percent of the entire 117th Congress. Throughout her career, Congresswoman Sánchez has proven her commitment to expanding Latino representation in every industry, advancing equality, and eliminating opportunity gaps to ensure Latino communities can reach their full potential.
