Tax credit would help with housing, meals, child care & more

Washington, DC—Rep. Linda T. Sánchez (CA-38), member of the Ways and Means Committee, today introduced the Providing Essentials for Frontline Workers Act, legislation that would ease the financial burden of frontline essential workers during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Specifically, it would provide a payroll tax credit for certain pandemic-related employee benefit expenses paid by employers. Expenses could include providing temporary housing at hotels for those employees who are sheltering elsewhere to avoid exposing family members, meals, laundry service for uniforms, or child care expenses.

“Essential workers across the county are making countless sacrifices to keep us safe,” said Rep. Sánchez. “This legislation is for the nurse getting off a 12-hour shift who doesn’t want to risk getting their children sick. It’s about giving them peace of mind by covering the cost of staying at a hotel. It’s about easing the burden of child care costs for a food processing worker. We ask so much of these heroes, and this is one small way we can look out for them during this crisis.”
