The Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2022 —passed by Congress and signed into law by President Joe Biden in March – included much-needed investments to lower the cost of living for working families, create good-paying jobs, and address issues we face at home and abroad.
For the first time in over a decade, the package also included funding for Member-specific community projects. Congresswoman Sánchez secured funding for nine community projects requested by community partners in the 38th Congressional District.
"Internet access is needed for almost everything today, from connecting with family to e-learning and applying for jobs. It needs to be accessible for everyone," said Congresswoman Linda T. Sánchez. "I'm delighted to be here in Norwalk today to highlight how this funding will make the internet more accessible for our students and residents."
"Thank you, Congresswoman Linda T. Sánchez, for working with us to obtain this necessary funding that will assist in the digital divide that exists within the City," stated Norwalk Mayor Rick Ramirez. "This funding will help some of the City's neighborhood students, as well as the rest of the community have equitable access to the internet, which is a key factor in today's technologically driven society."
Specifically, the funding Congresswoman Sánchez secured will be used to create free opt-in "Smart & Safe" Wi-Fi Zones within public parks and facilities.
In addition to this project, Congresswoman Sánchez delivered funding for the following community projects (listed in alphabetical order):
$200,000 for the Boys and Girls Club of Whittier
$200,000 for the City of Bellflower
$475,000 for the City of La Mirada
$2 million for the City of La Palma
$2.5 million for the City of Pico Rivera's PFAS Groundwater Treatment Project
$1.5 million for the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works
$450,000 for the City of Whittier's Central Library Remodel and Improvement Project
$500,000 for The Whole Child's Mental Health and Housing Services Project
Congresswoman Sánchez continued: "As your Representative in Congress, it is my honor to fight for you every day. That includes fighting for the resources needed to complete the projects in your neighborhood that are important to you. I was proud to request, fight for, and deliver these nine projects that total nearly $10 million in funding for Southern California."
