Linda Sánchez Statement on President Obama’s State of the Union Address

January 12, 2016

Washington, DC- Representative Linda Sánchez (CA-38), Chairwoman of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and a member of the Ways and Means Committee, this evening issued the following statement on President Obama’s final State of the Union address to Congress:

“Tonight, the President reminded all of us that we each have a stake -- and a say -- in our country's future.

“As I listened and reflected on the past seven years, I remembered that achievement takes hard work and commitment.

“With 70 straight months of job creation, President Obama and Congressional Democrats can proudly say that we have helped to lead our nation’s economy back from the depths of the Great Recession.

“We can say that because of the Affordable Care Act more Americans have health coverage than ever before.

“And because we stood shoulder to shoulder against hate and intolerance, a same sex couple in California can legally get married.

“Of course there are areas which I would have liked to see more done, especially when it comes to immigration. However, what’s clear after tonight is that the American people are looking to us to put partisan politics aside and get to work on helping working families thrive. I am hopeful – even in this election season – we can do the work our constituents sent us here to get done.

“I am hopeful that we can get back to debating big ideas and strive to meet the challenges the President laid out in his final State of the Union address.”
