Linda Sánchez Sworn-in to Congress

January 7, 2003
Linda Sánchez, who was elected to House of Representatives this past November, was sworn into office for the 108th Congress on January 7. Sánchez will represent the newly created 39th congressional district which includes the cities of Long Beach, Whitter, Paramount, Cerritos, and Lakewood.

Congresswoman Linda Sánchez was sworn in with her sister Representative Loretta Sanchez (D-Orange County). The two made history this past November as the first sisters ever elected to the United States Congress.

Linda Sánchez is one of the 54 new members coming to Capitol Hill. This past week she was appointed to the distinguished judiciary committee, and will make history again as the first Latina to ever serve on the committee.

This appointment will give her the opportunity to work on issues that are important to California families. Congresswoman Sánchez is a civil rights and discrimination attorney, and labor activist in California where she has investigated and prosecuted contractors who underpaid their employees. She now brings this knowledge and experience to the judiciary committee where crime reduction, protection of civil rights and liberties, and immigration issues will be at the top of her agenda.
