Press Release

Washington, DCU.S. Representative Linda Sánchez (CA-38), Chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Immigration Task Force, today released the following statement on President Trump’s woefully inadequate immigration proposal:

“Our nation’s immigration system is broken. Unfortunately, President Trump’s woefully inadequate proposal is not what America needs. His plan fails to make the changes necessary to overhaul America’s immigration system for the 21st century. It is time both parties get serious about adopting an immigration policy that builds on our country’s great tradition of diversity and reflects our values of compassion and fairness.

“America needs common sense immigration reform that fixes our broken system, deals humanely with refugees fleeing their home countries, and gives deserving people a chance to become equal members of society. What the president is proposing is a xenophobic, anti-immigrant agenda that if applied to previous generations would have barred millions of European and Asian immigrants from contributing to our country. President Trump needs to get serious if he wants to fix the immigration system.

“For more than three decades, the Congressional Hispanic Caucus has played a vital role in the development of our country’s immigration policies. We are proud of the expertise, experience, and understanding we have developed working on this important issue. If the president is serious about fixing our immigration system, he needs to drop his impractical, extreme views and work with the CHC on sensible, common sense legislation that will benefit our country for future generations.”
