Linda Sánchez Statement on LGBT History Month (Oct 4, 2011)

October 4, 2011

Washington, DCCongresswoman Linda Sánchez released the followingstatement honoring LGBT History Month.

"October provides us withthe opportunity to commemorate the pioneers and champions of the LGBT civilrights movement and celebrate their contributions to America's history andculture.

"As a country, we mustremain committed to upholding the principles of equality and respect anddignity for all. The end of the discriminatory ‘Don't Ask, Don't Tell'policy and President Obama's promise to no longer defend the Defense ofMarriage Act, both represent significant progress for civil rights. However, there is still much more left to accomplish.

"We must continue to striveto end discrimination in the workplace based on sexual orientation and fight sothat all Americans have the right to marry and start families with those theylove. I remain committed to supporting marriage equality, investments inHIV/AIDS care, treatment and research, and campaigns that take action againstbullying in schools.

"I hope Americans will joinme this month in recognizing the achievements of LGBT Americans and renewingour commitment to civil rights, equality and progress for the LGBT community."
