Linda Sánchez Announces $2 Million Awarded to Local Colleges (Oct 18, 2011)

Washington, DC –Congresswoman Linda Sánchez (CA-39) today announced that Cerritos College andEl Camino College will receive a total of $2 million in funding through aDepartment of Labor grant. Thegrant—which Congresswoman Sánchez supported—was awarded to the CaliforniaManufacturers and Technology Association which will disburse funding to bothcommunity colleges for job training and worker certification programs. Cerritos College and El Camino Collegedirectly service California's 39th Congressional District.

"This vital fundingwill provide people with the skills and training they need so they can landwell-paying jobs," said Congresswoman Sánchez. "In this economy, it is essential that we support programs that putAmericans back to work and provide them with the tools so that they caneffectively compete in a global economy."

This TechnicalSkills Training Grant will help fund the California IT & AdvancedManufacturing Career Pathways program. This training program provides certification and credentials ininformation technology and advanced manufacturing. The program will help current workers withcareer advancement, as well as provide unemployed workers with trainingnecessary to land jobs in the fields of technology.

The funds allotted to Cerritos College and El Camino Collegeare part of an overall $5 million grant awarded to the California Manufacturersand Technology Association. The grant is estimated to help more than 2,500program participants begin and complete education and training activities. It will also help more than 500 unemployedparticipants receive a degree or other type of credential to aid in employmentplacement.
