Sánchez: President Trump surrendering control to Elon Musk threatens democracy

WASHINGTON – Congresswoman Linda T. Sánchez (D-Calif.) today released the following statement on President Trump handing control of the Treasury Department’s payment system and other government agencies to Elon Musk:

“President Trump surrendering control of the government to Elon Musk is a direct attack on our democracy. The richest man in the world should not have the power to manipulate the system further for his personal gain.

“The president is allowing Elon Musk to make unilateral decisions about federal agencies and funding without any Congressional oversight. Alarmingly, he now has access to all Treasury Department payments, including payments for Social Security and Medicare benefits.

“Congress can’t sit idly by as our democratic institutions are dismantled by a couple of billionaires. While I will do everything I can to fight this, I’m calling on the few Republicans left who care about the rule of law, democracy and Congress’s oversight authority to join Democrats in opposing this unconstitutional overreach.

“The presidency is the most powerful position in the world, but a president with no congressional oversight is a king. This is not a partisan fight – it’s a fight for the future of our democracy!”
